The Queen in Edinburgh on Monday Credit: The ceremony on the palace forecourt marks the traditional start to the monarch’s stay at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland.

The ensemble tours internationally every two years, and this year they performed concerts in stunning cathedrals and other significant venues in Heidelberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Munich, Erding, Wies, and Salzburg. These performances featured music from Germany, in honoring the language our host countries, as well as the music of the United States—bringing our piece of home to audiences abroad in an invigorating spirit of artistic exchange. Smedstad led a remarkable and action-packed week for our singers—truly an example of the best of St.
Traveling together and performing so many successive concerts elevated their singing, and enabled them to focus deeply and repeatedly on the subtleties in the compositions. Our boys wholeheartedly embraced the experience of singing for German-speaking audiences in German, as well as the challenges of moving from city to city with such a full schedule.
Our singers grew in wisdom— as people, musicians, and international representatives. They formed new, lifelong friendships, and accumulated cultural and interpersonal experiences that will influence them for a lifetime. The combination of historical, cultural and artistic immersion, as well as a vivid grounding in contemporary German and Austrian life, was rich and varied. Smedstad has revealed about the initial stages of the planning. I can safely say, with the utmost enthusiasm as a first-time witness to the tour, that this was an extraordinary week.
Congratulations to the members of Concert Chorale for representing St. Many thanks to Mr. Smedstad for his tireless efforts in bringing this invaluable experience to our boys, and to our St. John Hendricks Prior to joining St.

Paul’s Episcopal Church is located on the banks of the Savannah River, where in , General Oglethorpe founded Georgia’s second city as a fortress and Indian trading center upriver from Savannah. The present building is a copy of the old Federal style church of , the fourth church on the site that burned in the Great Augusta Fire of Architect of the church, Henry T. Formerly a warehouse dating back to the 19th Century, these apartments are within walking distance of St Paul’s Cathedral, the Thames and Millennium Bridge.
None of that is considered credible by modern historians but, although the surviving text is problematic, either Bishop Restitutus or Adelphius at the Council of Arles seems to have come from Londinium. The present structure of St Peter upon Cornhill was designed by Christopher Wren following the Great Fire in but it stands upon the highest point in the area of old Londinium and medieval legends tie it to the city’s earliest Christian community.
In , however, a large and ornate 5th-century building on Tower Hill was excavated, which might have been the city’s cathedral. The fate of the first cathedral building is unknown. Christianity was restored among the East Saxons in the late 7th-century and it is presumed that either the Anglo-Saxon cathedral was restored or a new building erected as the seat of bishops such as Cedd , Wine and Earconwald , the last of whom was buried in the cathedral in This building, or a successor, was destroyed by fire in , but rebuilt in the same year.
The cathedral was burnt, with much of the city, in a fire in , as recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. A further fire in disrupted the work, and the new cathedral was not consecrated until During the period of construction, the style of architecture had changed from Romanesque to Gothic and this was reflected in the pointed arches and larger windows of the upper parts and East End of the building. The Gothic ribbed vault was constructed, like that of York Minster , of wood rather than stone, which affected the ultimate fate of the building.

Somehow I had expected Trafalgar Square to be the site of some famous event. It is officially in the borough of the City of Westminster. It is guarded by four lions at its base. Nash cleared the square as part of his Charing Cross Improvement Scheme. The present architecture of the square is due to Sir Charles Barry and was completed in We traversed the square a number of times in our ten days, and the mood was always different. It sits at the top of Ludgate Hill , the highest point in the City of London.
On the other hand it can be useful in studying facade proportions. This was the case in both museums and cathedrals. Some of the views are definitely about business and work and architectural show biz. The museum, formerly a power plant, still retains its old stack. I had thought that crossing the Millenium Bridge would be a cool experience.

A 1st century B. She promulgated laws whereby she led forth the women to martial strife, while on the men she fastened humiliation and servitude. They embarked instead upon an enterprise unparalleled in the whole of history, that of building up a state without men and then actually defending it themselves…. Then, with peace assured by their military success, they entered into sexual relationships with surrounding peoples so that their line would not die out.
After conquering most of Europe, they also seized a number of city-states in Asia. Here they founded Ephesus. When the Greeks immigrated to Ephesus in Asia Minor, they began to call her by the name of one of their own deities; Artemis. The hierarchy of her priesthood was dominated by women. Men could become priests, but only if they first renounced their masculinity, through the act of ritual castration.
In addition to being castrated they also abstained from certain types of food.
